Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a mild vaginal infection caused by bacterial imbalance. This condition occurs if the good, healthy bacteria in the vagina are dominated by other bacteria types. One common symptom of BV is vaginal discharge that is usually grey or white in color and has a “fishy” smell. In other cases, those with BV also experience vaginal itching and dryness.
Any woman can acquire this infection including those who are not sexually active. BV is not a sexually-transmitted infection (STI). It is usually treated with antibiotics but even with treatment, it can still occur within a few months. Those who use practice douching and use scented soaps and detergents are prone to BV. Even your diet can also be a risk factor for it to recur. To help you get rid of bacterial vaginosis, below are some points to remember to alter your unhealthy lifestyle.
Include More Probiotics in Your Diet
Probiotics are usually classified as the “good” bacteria. Since BV is caused by an imbalance of certain bacteria in the vagina, consuming Probiotics can help you out in dealing with this imbalance and fight against the “bad” bacteria. The most common strain of bacteria are lactobacilli. Sometimes, decreased numbers of these bacteria can lead to vaginal pH increase and later, BV. It is recommended to include more Probiotics in your diet to prevent the said condition. Probiotics are usually found in cultured or fermented foods such as kimchi, yogurt, kefir, miso, and natto.
Consume Foods with Antibacterial Abilities
It’s also important to eat foods with antibacterial properties to prevent BV. These foods stop the harmful bacteria and infections. One good example of an antibacterial food is garlic due to allicin which is helpful in preventing cancer. Eating antioxidant-rich foods such as berries and citrus fruits is also a good idea because they are rich in Vitamin C which is essential for healing anal fissures (cuts in the anus).

Increase Water Intake
You can also fight BV by increasing your water intake. Drinking up to 8 glasses of water a day keeps your body hydrated. Water also flushes away the toxins and has an ability to boost your immune system.
Eat Less Red Meats
Instead of eating red meats (e.g. beef), go for the lean ones like chicken instead. You can also consume salmon and tuna. The latter ones are good sources of omega-3 which may aid in fighting inflammation. Make sure you increase your consumption of green, leafy vegetables as well.
